A child is never subjected to fear in a lesson; our lessons are designed to set the child up for success and this in turn builds self esteem. In fact, we as ISR instructors are taught how to recognize fear, dilated pupils, shallow, rapid breathing...and we are trained to bring a near drowning victim from fear to competence. There is an important difference between being fearful and being apprehensive because you are not yet skilled in a dangerous environment. ISR is not like traditional swim lessons; it is a drowning prevention program that teaches survival swimming. Your child may not happily skip to his or her ISR lesson each day at first, but that's okay. Sometimes as a parent, you make sure your child does things for his or her safety, like receiving vaccinations and wearing a seat belt, because you know they are important. The same can be said for ISR. FUN can be defined as when SKILL meets CHALLENGE. Once competent in their skills, many children cannot be dragged away from the pool. They are having entirely too much FUN. When you learn about ISR, you know this is the most important level of protection you can give your child to prevent drowning. If fences, supervision, and alarms fail, your child's skill is an additional measure of protection! Copyright © 2012 ISR of Lake Lanier, LLC

As Summer approaches, remember to always practice safety around ALL bodies of water and especially on Lake Lanier! Georgia's Life Jacket Law states "all children under 10 years of age on a moving vessel must wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved and appropriately sized personal flotation device (PFD)." The law does not apply when a child is within a fully enclosed roofed cabin or other fully enclosed roofed compartment or structure of the vessel. Code 52-7-8 (d) (3). ISR of Lake Lanier family and friends...floaties and toy-type rings are NOT approved flotation devices. Please be aware that even Coast Guard approved life jackets cause a child to float in the face down position! Floating with a CG approved life jacket can be difficult for even our most skilled ISR of Lake Lanier students. At your child's next ISR lesson, make sure the instructor tests your son or daughters swimming and floating skills while wearing their life jacket. |
